The FSA ID is a username and password that you’ll create in order to submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. It’s important to remember that your FSA ID must be created 1-3 days before starting the FAFSA.
Pro Tip – Even though the 2024-25 FAFSA won’t be released until December, you can go ahead and create your FSA ID now. You’ll create your FSA ID at StudentAid.gov.
Everyone creating an FSA ID for the 2024-25 FAFSA must have their own separate email address. Currently, the application asks for your mobile phone number and/or your email address however, you’ll be asked to provide your own email address when it’s time to complete the FAFSA in December. Therefore, we suggest you add your email when you create your account.
Pro Tip – Students shouldn’t use their high school email address for their FSA ID account. Colleges and the FAFSA folks will send you emails throughout your college career and you won’t be able to access your high school email account after you graduate. Best practice is to use your current personal email address, or if you don’t have one, create a new email address that you can use for the FSA ID – as well for college and scholarship applications. Pro Tip – The FSA ID Worksheet (available in Spanish) will guide you through the FSA ID creation process, plus it provides a place to store important information. Be sure to keep the worksheet in a safe place.
